There Is a Hare In My Chicken

No, the title of this post was not taken from a conversation between a customer and a waiter. I am making reference to the graphic novel series that involves Chickenhare, the plucky half-chicken half-hare star of a series of graphic novels by Chris Grine. Chickenhare is accompanied by a bearded turtle named Abe (my personal favorite) and a pair of furry demons named Banjo and Meg. The group manages to get into all sorts of trouble and adventures both funny and harrowing. This may be a series suitable for young readers but all ages will find something to delight in.

The black and white art of the original Eisner nominated series is often striking and always lively. I have heard it being compared to Jeff Smith’s Bone and that is not far off but Chris certainly has a style all his own. The series is being re-released in color by Scholastic and the few pages I have seen so far lead me to believe that Chickenhare and friends will shine in color as well. I suggest you read this series as soon as possible. You can order the first series of the new book here.

It really is for kids. Really.
It really is for kids. Really.

By the way, did I mention that the books will soon be made into an animated movie by Sony? I’m trying to figure the perfect voice cast out and so far have come up with the following: Chickenhare- Chris Grine ( of course), Abe- Michael Cera, Banjo- Steve Carell and Meg- Zoeoey Deschanel. So you better get on the Chickenhare train before it leaves the station and everyone in the world hops aboard. Go on, be the cool kid in class.

If you want to meet Chris in person then be sure to go to PlanetComicon this April cause he will be in attendance. I have word that he might even give out a sketch or three and sign your Chickenhare book if you ask real nice (telling him how awesome he is won’t hurt either).

Planet Comicon

Another Planet Comicon has come and gone. While artist alley had expanded (which is nice) the dealer section seemed to have shrunk. I did get a few good deals though; Guardians of the Galaxy hardcover, Captain America hardcover and the Frankencastle hardcover signed by Mr. Moore of course. It is always nice to chat with Chris Grine of Chickenhare fame. He’s a real nice guy with a genuinely great web comic.

I wasn’t able to get any sketches this time but really wanted one from Fransisco Franciavelli (probably mangled his name). The Comic Book Geek Speak guys were there but I couldn’t work up the courage to talk to them. This after trying to get Chris to go talk with them I know, I am so ashamed.

Over all it was a good time. I brought my 3 year old daughter to the con on Sunday and she had a blast. Her very first convention! I will have to be sure to bring her on Saturday next time because there were more costumed characters and she wanted to get her picture taken with all the super-heroes.

Hopefully next year I will be behind a table promoting my children’s picture book or web comic. If not, I am thinking of buying a table just to search for an artist to work with. Hey, it couldn’t hurt right?

Post Planet Comicon

Another Planet Comicon has come and gone. I had a pretty good time overall. Sometimes I just wish the con would get a huge influx of new blood for guests and Artist Alley. It seems the same local people always show up with little difference. I’m not knocking the locals. I like some of the locals. It’s always nice to chat with Chris Grine of Chickenhare fame. Jason Aaron is a cool guy. I guess I was spoiled by Wizard World in Chicago when it was . There’s always next year.

You may have noticed I mentioned nothing about my pitches and finding an artist. I didn’t find one. There was nary a portfolio to be found. I remember the days when everyone and their mother hauled their portfolio around the con for reviews. Ah well.

I didn’t have a lot of money to spend this year but did get a Spider-man GN that included Joe Kelly and Chris Bachalo’s Hammerhead story. Both of those men astound me with their talent. I also picked up a Jonah Hex GN because I always liked the look of the character but know next to nothing about him. Phil Noto pencilled some of the stories and Jordi Bernet did the rest. I preferred the stylings of the Bernet guy for this type of book but Noto isn’t bad.

Posted a want ad at Digital Webbing for an artist for Deadington. Let’s see if there are any bites.

Happy Halloween! What do you mean it’s over?

Better late then never, eh? Hope everyone had a gruesome and horrible Halloween filled with ghouls and goblins and things that go KRUNK SLOSH in the night.

I have begun writing my YA novel again. It feels good to slip back into step with Dax, Christabel, the scarecrow, Rawley and the rest.

I have only received one return mail in regards to the children’s story I wrote. Rejected again. There are still plenty more places to submit the story to so lets not break out the noose yet. I have a back-up plan even if none of the agents or editors accept the story.

I am contemplating writing another comic-book mini-series but am leary of getting too far ahead with it before finding an artist. From past experience, I know the difficulties of finding an artist. It’s like, really difficult. I have never found one but I know they are out there. Someone is looking for just the right project and someday I will have written it. Oh yes. I will have written it.

Remember to mark you calenders for November 27th and be certain to visit the new Chickenhare webcomic site. There’s a link to the site in my blog roll. Book mark it. Now!
