Begin Again

I finally finished the first draft of the Deadington movie script. Let me bask in the glow of accomplishment. OK. That was long enough. Don’t want to get too carried away here. Now on to the second draft.

Wait just a minute. This is the first time I have completed a full draft of a movie script. I have certainly attempted to finish a first draft before but for whatever reason, I was unable to stick the landing. I think the key difference this time was that I kept the stakes and the setting relatively small. Mental note to leave the world altering fate of millions in the balance stories to someone else…for now.

There was no driver…

With Halloween nearly upon us, I thought I would share a few of the movies I have watched to get in the spirit this year. I started with one of my all time favorites; The Monster Squad. I have always had fond memories of this movie. I had once resigned myself to viewing it only in those memories, until it finally was released on DVD. I owe much of my love of monsters to this movie. If you haven’t seen it, see it now. Right now. OK, now we can talk about the story of Dracula rounding up all his fiendish friends (Creature, Wolf Man, Mummy, and Frankenstein’s monster) to tip the balance of good and evil in their direction. Too bad they weren’t prepared for the local kids horror club rechristened the Monster Squad. Good thing the kids have that scary German guy on their side. Oh yeah, and Van Helsing’s diary.

The next movie in line was The Fog. I’m talking the original one, not the updated version that isn’t even worthy to crawl in the shadow of John Carpenter. The Fog is a classic, plain and simple. Remember, death always knocks in Antonio Bay.

Lastly, so far, was The Car. I suppose this is a great double feature with The Fog due to the title alone. This is another movie that I had resigned myself to never see reach DVD. It has its goofy parts but overall it is a great movie that knows exactly what to do with a killer modified black Lincoln. I could actually see this being remade today if the right person was behind the camera. Maybe I’ll tackle the script myself someday soon.

Speaking of scripts, I am still working on my Deadington script and am determined to finish this thing before this year ends. I don’t know why I find it so hard to find time to sit and write consistently…probably has something to do with a lovely little almost three-year old that wants to play. When she wants to play monsters, it’s hard to refuse.

Apology Post

This is my apology post for not posting on the blog. Sorry. I don’t have much to report.

I’m still working on the Deadington movie script. I will let you know when the first draft is finished.

That’s all for now.

Obligatory Lament

Woe is me! There. I’m over it now. Kinda.

So by now you probably have guessed correctly that I still have not found an artist for either Count Obsideo or Deadington. Thus placing these projects in limbo.

I have come up with another project that I am trepidatious about to say the least. It involves drawing again and- GAK! I almost said too much. I don’t want to give anything away until I have more sure footing and can say that this is more than a passing fad. I will say that I have always been a fan of the comic strip and include Dennis the Menace, Peanuts, Calvin and Hobbes and Hagar the Horrible among my favorites.

That’s all for now. Wish me luck.

Post Planet Comicon

Another Planet Comicon has come and gone. I had a pretty good time overall. Sometimes I just wish the con would get a huge influx of new blood for guests and Artist Alley. It seems the same local people always show up with little difference. I’m not knocking the locals. I like some of the locals. It’s always nice to chat with Chris Grine of Chickenhare fame. Jason Aaron is a cool guy. I guess I was spoiled by Wizard World in Chicago when it was . There’s always next year.

You may have noticed I mentioned nothing about my pitches and finding an artist. I didn’t find one. There was nary a portfolio to be found. I remember the days when everyone and their mother hauled their portfolio around the con for reviews. Ah well.

I didn’t have a lot of money to spend this year but did get a Spider-man GN that included Joe Kelly and Chris Bachalo’s Hammerhead story. Both of those men astound me with their talent. I also picked up a Jonah Hex GN because I always liked the look of the character but know next to nothing about him. Phil Noto pencilled some of the stories and Jordi Bernet did the rest. I preferred the stylings of the Bernet guy for this type of book but Noto isn’t bad.

Posted a want ad at Digital Webbing for an artist for Deadington. Let’s see if there are any bites.

So…what’s up with Deadington?

I’m glad you asked.

A few posts ago I said that I was thinking of starting a story and posting a sentence or paragraph or two each week on the blog to keep it updated. It sounded like a good plan at the time. However, it turned into a monster that decided he didn’t want to do my bidding. Not only that, but he prefered to crash through the castle walls and ravage the countryside.

My web story became an idea for a comic book series. It fits very well for a comic book series even though that is not what I started out creating. I have posted a few teasers the last few days and will soon have a proposal for the series posted. I am a bit leery about posting a series proposal on the web but my hope is it’s just too good of a bait for an artist/collaborator to pass up. Plus, by putting it on my website I effectively put a BRANDON JIMISON CREATED THIS stamp on it. Expect a new proposal for Count Obsideo to follow.
